Greetings from the offices of Costhetics, Australia’s leading resource for news and information on all things cosmetic enhancement. We’re also a leading advocate of the concept, “You do you” and we think the world could use a dose of this philosophy.

Why? The pesky old Internet has given rise to a culture of judgment about just about everything, including aesthetic treatments and procedures. Everyone seems to have an opinion about the value of transformational beauty procedures, and we think that’s great. What’s less great is that everyone wants everyone else to have the same opinion, too.

We’re looking at the issue from all sides and presenting the facts for you to interpret as you see fit.

No Plastics: Why People Frown on Cosmetic Enhancement

Objectively, there is nothing morally, legally, or ethically wrong with a mature, autonomous adult making modifications to his/her body. It has risen dramatically in popularity over the years, thanks in part to millennials and their acceptance of preventive as well as restorative procedures. Some folks who frown on cosmetic enhancement think:

  • It’s superficial
  • You can be beautiful naturally with diet and exercise
  • It’s dangerous
  • People who have cosmetic procedures are insecure
  • It’s caving into a “the patriarchy” (this is levelled at breast surgery)
  • It’s narcissistic
  • It’s expensive
  • You should love yourself the way you are
  • It turns beauty into a weapon
  • It’s addictive

Pro Plastics: Don’t Be a Judge Judy

If you’ve put on make-up, cut your hair a certain way, worn a padded bra, or dyed your hair, you’ve altered your appearance, say people who are down with cosmetic enhancement. They also feel that aesthetic procedures are a completely personal decision and, as such, don’t require input from anyone else…particularly after the work has been done. Being pro-plastics is actually Body Positivity 101, says Bustle Magazine. “Even if you disagree with someone’s actions or you wouldn’t choose to do them yourself, you simply shouldn’t judge them for it.” Besides, they say

  • It’s good for your physical health – breast reduction, rhinoplasty, and other procedures offer genuine physical benefits.
  • It’s good for your professional health – youthfulness is valued in our world and looking refreshed can make a person look (and feel) more competitive.
  • It’s good for your sexual health – increased self-confidence provided by surgery or a non-invasive treatment such as laser resurfacing or dermal fillers can make people feel more comfortable within their own bodies and more eager to be with others.
  • It’s good for your ongoing health – any kind of fat loss or fat reduction (liposuction) can help reduce the risk of diabetes, heart conditions and other illnesses. It has also been shown that people who have cosmetic surgery procedures are more likely to adapt their lifestyles with a better diet and fitness routine.

Celebrities Who Love Their Cosmetic Procedures

In 2015, Elle Magazine reported on Lisa Kudrow’s views on rhinoplasty. The Friends actress said it, “…it was life altering. I went from, in my mind, hideous, to not hideous. I did it the summer before going to a new high school. So there were plenty of people who wouldn’t know how hideous I looked before. That was a good, good, good change.”

House Bunny star Anna Faris told People magazine, “I never, ever thought I’d do something like that…(I) always thought plastic surgery was caving in to ‘the man,’ you know? But it came down to a really simple thing: I wanted to fill out a bikini.”

Iggy Azalea is very “out” about her plastic surgery. “I just feel it’s freer to just say it, and then you don’t have to worry about if anyone is gonna dig up things,” she said. She also thanked her plastic surgeon. “He is the reason I have fabulously perky boobs …”

In the same article, Vanderpump Rules star Scheana Marie said, “I can’t stand having forehead wrinkles on camera” and Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco said, “As much as you want to love your inner self, I’m sorry, you also want to look good. I don’t think you should do it for a man or anyone else, but if it makes you feel confident, that’s amazing.”

Costhetics Says

Surprise! When it comes to cosmetic enhancement, celebrities are people, too. The over-riding reason most individuals choose cosmetic enhancement is simply to feel better about themselves. If you already feel good about yourself, that’s great, but please don’t rain on somebody else’s parade. Agreed?
